Energy is a quantity expressing the potential for heat or mechanical work.

Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Should the energy of an object decrease, the energy in its environment increases an equal amount.

Energy comes in several forms; there is kinetic energy (which the object possesses due to motion), potential energy (which the object possesses due to its position relative to other objects) and others.

The base unit of energy is called the joule, or, as a derived unit, the watt second. Energy cannot be measured in absolute terms. Only the transitions between states in a system can be defined, which means energy can only be measured in relative terms.
